Poems: Fifth Rider

Fifth Rider

You caught my eye
saying hello like that

while bicycling on the trail
with your friends.

Like a stampede you all were
through the woods
rolling

I had been walking in silence.

From half-a-mile away
I could tell by your voices and the sound of your speed

that there were four to six of you
and I was right

as you blundered on
passing me.

Then you left quickly
and silence was my companion
and I thought it might be nice
to walk with you;

the fifth rider who said "hello".
